楼上的意思是对了，但是省略的东西不太对～～
句子的意思 有心脏疾病的中年人的数量比一般想象的要多，因此多的是“数量”，也就是说省略的是 the number （of middle-aged people）。如果要说清楚，就给后面加个定语从句the number of middle-aged people who suffer from heart trouble.
其实按意思的语序来说，补上省略的东西，原句是
More (number of) middle-aged people than the number (of middle-aged people which) is generally believed suffer from heart trouble. 但是这就犯了英文修辞里头重脚轻的忌讳（先行词it的用法就是因为这条产生的），因此把这部分甩在后面了。
注意：上面的which是引导从句修饰number的，所以不用who。
